Federal authorities have charged six Detroit residents with kidnapping and conspiracy in connection with the March 2, 2015, kidnapping of two Indianapolis minors.
The indictment alleges that the victims, minor siblings, were kidnapped from their home on Lasalle Street in Indianapolis by a group of individuals who used zip-ties to restrain them and cut their fingers to compel them to reveal the location of their mother, who had allegedly stolen narcotics and proceeds from a Detroit drug dealer, John Thomas, also known as Jay.
According to the indictment, Thomas, 38, and his co-conspirators, including Alaa Al-Salehi, 23, also known as Big Boi, April Sandell, 26, Bernando Reeves, 20, also known as C-Note, Mohammed Karkash, 22, also known as MJ, and Ali Hussain Ashore, 26, traveled to Indianapolis in search of Thomas’s former girlfriend and her minor child.
The indictment charges Thomas and his co-conspirators with two counts of kidnapping and one count of conspiracy to commit kidnapping. If convicted, each defendant faces up to life in prison.
The FBI and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department worked together to investigate the kidnapping and apprehend the suspects. The victims were returned safely to their family.
‘I want to commend the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department for their immediate reaction to this kidnapping,’ said Josh J. Minkler, the United States Attorney. ‘As a result of their non-stop efforts, this case was solved in less than 48 hours, the victims were rescued and the defendants arrested. Law enforcement has sent a strong message; when children are involved, we will send the cavalry.’
An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial at which the government must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
