Today, the grim hand of justice was felt in Tulsa as Jesse Wayne Caughron, a 38-year-old man from Skiatook, Oklahoma, faced the music for his heinous crimes. U.S. District Judge John D. Russell handed down a sentence of 144 months imprisonment, followed by 3 years of supervised release, for Caughron’s admitted offenses of Assault of an Intimate Dating Partner by Strangling, Suffocating, and Attempting to Strangle and Suffocate in Indian County; and Witness Tampering.
Court documents paint a chilling picture of Caughron’s actions. Following accusations of infidelity against his partner, he subjected her to a brutal attack. He suffocated her with a pillow, hit her repeatedly, and strangled her until she lost consciousness, leaving her with life-threatening injuries. After obtaining a protective order against Caughron, the victim was subjected to further harassment and threats from him, who also attempted to sabotage her testimony.
Caughron, a citizen of the Cherokee Nation, had previously been released on bond but was ordered to have no contact with the victim. Yet, he violated this no-contact order, leading to his detention for violating the conditions of his release. Now, he will remain in custody pending transfer to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.
The FBI and Tulsa Police Department were instrumental in investigating and bringing this case to justice. Assistant U.S. Attorney Stacey P. Todd and Stephen Scaife prosecuted the case with determination.
Caughron’s case serves as a stark reminder of the violence that can arise from domestic disputes and the lengths some will go to to interfere with the legal process. The community is left in shock, seeking solace in the fact that justice has been served.
