A 41-year-old Hankinson, North Dakota, man has been sentenced to nine years in federal prison for his role in a heinous crime that left two minor victims scarred for life.
Sky Walker Lawrence was slapped with the harsh sentence by U.S. District Judge Charles B. Kornmann in Aberdeen, South Dakota, on January 18, 2023.
Lawrence was ordered to pay $200 as a statutorily required special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The abusive sexual contact took place between 2012 and 2018 in Northeastern South Dakota and within the tribal lands of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate Sioux Tribe.
Lawrence was accused of threatening or placing the victims in fear in order to perpetrate the abusive sexual contacts.
The Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate Tribe’s Law Enforcement and the FBI investigated the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeremy R. Jehangiri serving as the prosecutor.
Lawrence was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service to continue serving his sentence.
The harsh sentence is a welcome relief to the victims and their families, who have been living with the trauma of Lawrence’s actions for years.
Lawrence’s conviction serves as a reminder that those who commit such heinous crimes will be held accountable for their actions.
