BRONX, NY – Nineteen alleged members and associates of the brutal “Slut Gang,” a notorious street crew operating out of the Boston Secor public housing development in the Bronx, are facing federal charges after a years-long investigation, officials announced yesterday. The gang is accused of a relentless campaign of violence, drug dealing, and intimidation that terrorized the Northern Bronx for years.
Acting United States Attorney Joon H. Kim laid out the charges: racketeering conspiracy, narcotics conspiracy, robbery conspiracy, extortion, and multiple firearms offenses. “Today’s indictment charges members and associates of a violent street gang with allegedly wreaking havoc on the streets of the Northern Bronx for years, committing countless acts of violence against rival gang members and innocents alike,” Kim stated. The takedown is the latest in a series of crackdowns on Bronx gangs, following the 2016 indictment of 120 members of the Big Money Bosses (“BMB”) and the 2Fly YGz (“2Fly”). To date, a significant number of those defendants have already pleaded guilty – 47 of 63 in U.S. v. Nico Burrell et al. and 49 of 57 in U.S. v. Laquan Parrish et al.
NYPD Commissioner James P. O’Neill emphasized the brazen nature of the gang’s alleged activities. “This gang allegedly acted with impunity in the Bronx,” he said. “But this morning, detectives and agents carried out precise, targeted arrests against the defendants who, as alleged, committed robberies, shootings, and other violence to protect their drug trade.” The investigation, which began in 2014, involved a joint effort by the NYPD’s Bronx Gang Squad, HSI’s Violent Gang Unit, the DEA’s New York Field Division, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives.
According to the Superseding Indictment, the “Slut Gang” was a primary rival of both the BMB and 2Fly gangs, engaging in a protracted and bloody conflict. The indictment details numerous instances of “fatal and non-fatal violence” including shootings, stabbings, slashings, beatings, extortion, and robberies, all allegedly committed to maintain control of territory and drug distribution. Angel M. Melendez, Special Agent-in-Charge of HSI, highlighted the severity of the gang’s alleged behavior: “Drugs, guns, and robbery are just the beginning of the charges faced by members of the Slut Gang. This is a violent street gang with alleged involvement in shootings, stabbings, and beatings over several years.”
Law enforcement officials have already seized a significant amount of evidence, including crack, heroin, MDMA, and marijuana, as well as firearms and ammunition. DEA Special Agent-in-Charge James J. Hunt underscored the broader impact of gang violence on the city. “Gangs in New York that allegedly traffic drugs throughout our city streets fuel addiction and violent crime,” Hunt stated. “Law enforcement’s focused efforts to reclaim our city from these gangs have led to numerous takedowns over the past three years and yesterday’s arrests.”
The investigation utilized court-authorized electronic surveillance, intercepting hundreds of phone calls that allegedly implicated gang members in criminal activity.
