Smart on Crime Initiative Implemented in Tennessee

In a bid to make Knoxville safer, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Tennessee has implemented the Smart on Crime Initiative. The initiative, launched in early 2013, aims to ensure federal laws are enforced more fairly and efficiently, particularly in an era of reduced budgets.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the Smart on Crime Initiative focuses on five key goals: to devote finite resources to the most important law enforcement priorities, to promote fairer enforcement of the laws and alleviate disparate impacts of the criminal justice system, to ensure just punishments for low-level, nonviolent offenders, to bolster prevention and reentry efforts to deter crime and reduce recidivism, and to strengthen protections for vulnerable populations.

On Monday, Jan. 25, 2016, the local Smart on Crime Initiative kicked off with a Community Resource Expo in Chattanooga, Tenn. The event was attended by U.S. Probation Office Chief, Tony Anderson, and his staff, as well as representatives from various community service providers, including Behind the Bars, BlueCross BlueShield, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and others.

The Community Resource Expo aimed to provide federal ex-offenders with the necessary resources to successfully re-enter the community and reduce recidivism. The event featured a partnership with community service providers who offered services such as job training, mental health counseling, and education.
