OCALA, FL – In a stunning turn of events at the Coleman Federal Correctional Complex in Sumter County, Michelle Nicole Marie Brannon, 36, of Lake County, and her brother, Robert Hayes, 46, from Hillsborough County, have been apprehended by federal authorities for their alleged roles in a drug smuggling operation. United States Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe announced the charges, which include serious federal offenses.
Brannon, according to court records, is facing one count of making a materially false statement or representation to a federal agency and one count of providing contraband to a federal prisoner. The substance in question was buprenorphine, a Schedule III controlled substance strictly forbidden for possession by federal inmates. If convicted, Brannon could face up to 10 years in federal prison.
Her brother, Hayes, is charged with one count of possession of contraband by a federal prisoner, which carries a maximum sentence of five years. Both individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
The incident unfolded on April 27, 2025, when Brannon visited Hayes during his incarceration. During the screening process for visitors, Brannon falsely claimed she had no narcotics on her person. However, she was caught red-handed as she attempted to deliver buprenorphine to Hayes.
This case is a testament to the relentless efforts of the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Federal Bureau of Prisons, who are jointly investigating this serious offense. Assistant United States Attorney Hannah Nowalk Watson will be prosecuting the case.
As the gritty details of this prison drug plot continue to unfold, the public awaits the outcomes of these high-stakes legal battles. The grim reality of organized crime and its infiltration into correctional facilities serves as a stark reminder of the importance of law enforcement’s vigilance in maintaining order within our justice system.
