New ORLEANS, LOUISIANA – Solomon Burke, a 36-year-old New Orleans resident, has entered a guilty plea on February 1, 2023, before U.S. District Court Judge Jane Triche Milazzo. The charges stem from a violation of the Federal Controlled Substances Act.
According to court documents, Burke admitted to possessing with the intent to distribute a mixture containing detectable amounts of heroin and marijuana. The charges are in line with Title 21 U.S.C. §§ 841(a)(1), (b)(1)(C), (b)(1)(D), and 18 U.S.C. § 2.
The defendant faces a dire consequence for his actions. For the heroin, Burke is looking at up to 20 years imprisonment, a fine of $1 million, and at least three years supervised release. The marijuana charge carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and at least two years of supervised release. Additionally, he must pay a mandatory special assessment fee of $100.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. The program fosters trust in communities and supports local organizations to prevent violence. It sets strategic enforcement priorities and measures results for public safety improvements.
Investigation into the case was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the New Orleans Police Department. Unit Chief Elizabeth Privitera of the Violent Crime/Gang Unit and Assistant Unit States Attorney Maurice E. Landrieu Jr. of the Narcotics Unit are handling the prosecution.
Burke’s sentencing is set for April 25, 2023.
