A 24-year-old Mexican national has been sentenced to a year and six months in prison for growing hundreds of pounds of marijuana and devastating the Plumas National Forest.
Alejandro Soto-Silva, 24, was handed down the harsh sentence by U.S. District Judge Kimberly J. Mueller for his role in the massive marijuana cultivation site discovered near the Soda Creek drainage on the Plumas National Forest in July 2014.
According to court documents, Plumas County Sheriff’s Office deputies and U.S. Forest Service agents raided the site and arrested Soto-Silva after spotting him processing marijuana. The raid uncovered 30-40 pounds of processed marijuana and 3,724 growing marijuana plants.
Law enforcement also documented the extensive damage caused by Soto-Silva’s activities, including trail building, forest clearing, irrigation, pesticide use, and extensive garbage throughout the cultivation site. The U.S. Forest Service estimates it will cost at least $9,572 to rehabilitate and remediate the National Forest habitat injured by the marijuana cultivation.
Soto-Silva faces a significant amount of time behind bars, but some question whether the punishment fits the crime. ‘This was a serious offense that had a significant impact on our community and the environment,’ said U.S. Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner. ‘We will continue to work tirelessly to protect our public lands and bring those responsible to justice.’
The case was the result of a joint investigation by the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Forest Service, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Christiaan Highsmith prosecuting the case.
Soto-Silva’s sentence serves as a warning to those who would engage in similar activities: the consequences will be severe. As the war on drugs continues, it’s clear that those who choose to defy the law will face the full force of the justice system.
