Derek McCloskey, Methamphetamine Possession with Intent to Distribute, South Dakota 2025

PIERRE, SD – In a groundbreaking ruling, Derek McCloskey, the despicable drug kingpin from St. Francis, South Dakota, has been sentenced to seven years in federal prison for his relentless defiance of law enforcement and his dangerous methamphetamine possession with intent to distribute.

The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge Eric C. Schulte on September 9, 2025, also includes a four-year supervised release term, a $1,000 fine, $24,965.83 in restitution, and a mandatory $200 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

Mccloskey’s downfall began with a high-speed chase on May 16, 2024, which saw him collide with multiple law enforcement vehicles, leaving behind significant damage. During the pursuit, he and his passenger discarded heaps of meth and a rifle from their vehicle. The relentless efforts of personnel from the United States Marshals Service, the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety, and local sheriff’s offices culminated in McCloskey’s capture. Officers seized the rifle and approximately 25 grams of pure methamphetamine.

Data retrieved from McCloskey’s phone suggested his involvement in meth distribution within the Rosebud Indian Reservation. The investigation into this case was a collaborative effort by several agencies, including the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety, and the FBI.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kirk Albertson and Meghan Dilges were instrumental in prosecuting the case. McCloskey has been immediately remanded into the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, where he will begin his sentence for his crimes against society.
