St. Paul Man Lied to Get Disability Checks
A 58-year-old St. Paul, Virginia man has been sentenced after making false statements to collect disability checks he wasn’t entitled to.
Ronald W. David, a resident of St. Paul, Va., was sentenced to two years of probation, including six months of home confinement, after pleading guilty to making materially false statements.
As part of his disability benefits, David was required to report all information regarding employment to the Railroad Retirement Board. However, in 2015, he knowingly made a willfully false statement and representation to the board by failing to report his self-employment with Copperhead Road Properties LLC.
The scheme allowed David to collect $70,206 in disability benefits he wasn’t entitled to. David was ordered to pay restitution to the Railroad Retirement Board in the amount of $70,206.
The investigation was conducted by Special Agent Patrick Fletcher of the Office of Inspector General U.S. Railroad Retirement Board. Special Assistant United States Attorney Kathleen Carnell prosecuted the case for the United States.
David’s sentence is a warning to those who attempt to deceive the system. ‘Making false statements to obtain benefits is a serious offense,’ said Acting United States Attorney Rick A. Mountcastle. ‘We will continue to hold individuals accountable for their actions.’
The case is a reminder that the Railroad Retirement Board and other government agencies have measures in place to detect and prevent such schemes. David’s conviction serves as a cautionary tale for those who think they can get away with defrauding the system.
