Defendant Pleads Guilty in $653,884 Tax Fraud Scheme
SALT LAKE CITY – A Utah resident has admitted to orchestrating a massive tax refund scam that left the United States Government out nearly $700,000 in lost revenue.
Stanley J. Wardle, 65, of Spanish Fork, Utah, pleaded guilty Monday in U.S. District Court in Salt Lake City to nine counts of filing false claims for income tax refunds. According to court documents, Wardle prepared and filed a false U.S. Individual Income Tax Return for the year 2008, in which he claimed a tax refund of $32,115.
Between Dec. 8, 2008 and May 13, 2009, Wardle caused additional false claims for tax refunds to be made on behalf of others. The total amount of false claims made by Wardle was $653,884, according to the indictment.
Wardle’s sentencing is set for February 27, 2014, before U.S. District Judge Dee Benson. He faces a statutory maximum sentence of five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 or twice the gross gain or loss caused by the defendant for each false claim charge.
The case was investigated by special agents of the IRS – Criminal Investigation and was prosecuted by Tax Division Trial Attorneys Michael Romano and Stuart Wexler.
Assistant Attorney General Kathryn Keneally commended the efforts of the investigating agents, stating that their hard work led to the successful prosecution of the case.
The guilty plea and sentencing of Stanley Wardle serve as a reminder of the severity of tax-related crimes and the consequences that come with committing them.
