Zuni Man Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison for Sexual Abuse

Grimy Times – New Mexico – A disturbing trend in sexual abuse continues to plague our communities, with the recent sentencing of a Zuni man for a heinous crime. On August 19, 2023, Stanton Hannaweeke, a 63-year-old enrolled member of the Pueblo of Zuni, engaged in a nonconsensual sexual act with Jane Doe.

According to court records, Hannaweeke pleaded guilty to one count of sexual abuse, a federal offense that carries no parole in the prison system. Upon his release from prison, he will be subject to 10 years of supervised release and must register as a sex offender.

Acting U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and Justin A. Garris, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Albuquerque Field Office, made the announcement today. The Gallup Resident Agency of the FBI’s Albuquerque Field Office investigated this case with assistance from Zuni Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jack Burkhead is prosecuting the case as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006.

Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims. For more information about Project Safe Childhood, please visit Justice.gov/PSC.

This case highlights the gravity of sexual abuse and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable. We urge victims to come forward and seek justice, and we commend the investigators and prosecutors for their tireless efforts in bringing this case to a close.

As we continue to grapple with the devastating impact of sexual abuse, we must remain vigilant and work together to create a safer, more just society for all.
