LIQUID METHAMPHETAMINE POSSESSION LANDS BROWNSVILLE MAN IN FEDERAL PRISON
A staggering 44 kilograms of liquid methamphetamine was seized from a vehicle at the United States Border Patrol checkpoint near Sarita, Texas, on October 25, 2016. The discovery led to the arrest of Steve Turrubiates, a 20-year-old Brownsville man, who would later plead guilty to possessing the illicit substance with the intent to distribute.
On December 29, 2016, Turrubiates pleaded guilty to the charge, and today, Senior U.S. District Judge Janis Jack handed down a 70-month prison sentence, followed by five years of supervised release. This harsh punishment serves as a reminder of the severe consequences of engaging in illicit drug trafficking.
The investigation into Turrubiates’ activities was led by the Drug Enforcement Administration, with assistance from the United States Border Patrol. Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert D. Thorpe Jr. prosecuted the case, ensuring that justice was served.
Turrubiates’ arrest took place at the primary inspection lane of the Border Patrol checkpoint, where a canine alerted agents to the presence of narcotics. Further inspection revealed tool marks on the gas tank and the bolts that hold it to the underside of the vehicle. Using a fiber optic scope, agents observed large plastic bags concealed within the fuel tank, containing over 44 kilograms of liquid methamphetamine.
The recovery of this massive quantity of liquid methamphetamine is a significant blow to the illicit drug trade in the region. It highlights the importance of continued collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the need for harsh penalties for those who engage in such activities.
Turrubiates’ case serves as a warning to those involved in illicit drug trafficking: the consequences of getting caught are severe and long-lasting. As the nation continues to grapple with the opioid epidemic and other drug-related issues, cases like this one serve as a reminder of the importance of effective law enforcement and the need for tougher sentences for those who engage in such activities.
In conclusion, the sentencing of Steve Turrubiates to 70 months in federal prison for possessing liquid methamphetamine with the intent to distribute is a significant victory for law enforcement and a warning to those involved in the illicit drug trade. As the nation continues to combat the opioid epidemic and other drug-related issues, cases like this one will remain a crucial part of the effort to keep our communities safe.
