SIOUX FALLS Man Fails to Register as Sex Offender
A federal judge has sentenced a Sioux Falls man to two years in prison for failing to register as a sex offender, a requirement he has been bound by since a previous federal conviction.
U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier handed down the sentence to Steven Flood, 38, on April 10, 2023. Flood was also ordered to serve five years of supervised release and pay a special assessment of $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The indictment, brought forth in November 2022, stemmed from Flood’s failure to register as a sex offender between June 15, 2022, and August 4, 2022. Flood had previously been convicted of a sex offense in federal court, which mandates that he register for the remainder of his life.
The investigation was led by the U.S. Marshals Service, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey C. Clapper taking on the prosecution of the case.
This conviction is part of a larger initiative to combat the growing issue of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide program launched in May 2006, works to locate, apprehend, and prosecute those who exploit children, as well as identify and rescue victims.
Flood was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, bringing an end to this chapter in his life.
