Defendant Sentenced for Possessing Machineguns

In a shocking turn of events, a Worland man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for possessing machineguns in violation of federal law.

Steven Shobert, 49, was arrested on August 29, 2023, for driving under the influence. During the arrest, officers found a holstered firearm on his hip, which he surrendered. A state judge imposed bond conditions, requiring Shobert to relinquish his firearms pending the DUI case. Shobert consented to a search of his residence, which resulted in the discovery of one Glock model 17 equipped with a machinegun conversion device, also known as a ‘Glock Switch.’

Law enforcement also found three AR-15 type machinegun conversion devices. Acting U.S. Attorney Eric Heimann explained that machinegun conversion devices can make a semiautomatic firearm into a fully automatic machinegun, and possession of these devices is a serious crime.

Shobert was indicted on November 15, 2023, and pleaded guilty on April 11. Chief U.S. District Court Judge Scott W. Skavdahl imposed the 18-month prison sentence. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan C. Coppom.

The crime was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Washakie County Sheriff’s Office. This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence.

Shobert’s sentence serves as a warning to those who would seek to possess and use such deadly devices. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
