Gulfport Man Sentenced for Making False Statement to Federal Officer
Gulfport, Miss. – Steven Wayne Cooper, 49, of Jackson County, has been sentenced for making a false statement to a federal officer.
Senior U.S. District Judge Louis Guirola, Jr., handed down a sentence of ‘time served’ (3 months and 17 days), three years of supervised release and a $1,100 fine to Cooper for willfully making a false material statement to a federal officer.
Cooper was identified as a suspect on July 20, 2018, when a uniformed US Forest Service Officer conducted a traffic stop for careless driving in Harrison County. Cooper provided false identification information, claiming to be his brother.
Cooper claimed to not have a driver’s license or other identification with him, providing his brother’s name, social security number, date of birth, and other personal information to the officer.
The Forest Service investigated the complaint and identified Cooper’s brother from a law enforcement body cam video. The investigation revealed that Cooper concealed his identity due to a suspended driver’s license for a DUI at the time of the encounter.
Cooper was charged in a federal criminal indictment and pleaded guilty before Judge Guirola on January 20, 2020.
Acting U.S. Attorney Darren J. LaMarca commended the U.S. Forest Service law enforcement team for their diligence in this case.
Assistant United States Attorney Stan Harris was the prosecutor for the case.
