Brian Oakleaf, 52, of Storm Lake, Iowa, has entered a guilty plea in federal court for possessing child pornography. The charges stem from a two-year-long investigation that culminated with the seizure of explicit materials from Oakleaf’s personal devices.
Oakleaf, who worked for the city of Storm Lake, admitted to receiving, distributing, and possessing child porn on two separate cellular phones between March 1, 2022, and July 29, 2024. Law enforcement traced the crime to Oakleaf through an online investigation into a file sharing program that was disseminating child sexual abuse material (CSAM).
The probe began when investigators zeroed in on an IP address associated with the illegal exchange of CSAM. A search warrant led to the discovery of Oakleaf’s involvement, using the alias ‘Dan Dyle’ to trade and view inappropriate content.
Upon executing a search warrant at his residence and office, authorities seized cell phones and electronics that contained over 20,000 images and 1 video over 90 minutes in length. The materials depicted toddlers engaged in bondage and sadistic and masochistic conduct.
This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a DOJ initiative aimed at combating child sexual exploitation and abuse. Oakleaf faces up to 40 years’ imprisonment, a $500,000 fine, and supervised release following any prison sentence. Sentencing will be determined by United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand.
The investigation was conducted by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations with prosecution led by Assistant United States Attorney Kraig R. Hamit. For more information on the case, visit https://ecf.iand.uscourts.gov/cgi-bin/login.pl. Follow @USAO_NDIA for updates.
