Former Storm Lake City employee Brian Oakleaf, 52, has pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of child pornography in federal court. The charges stem from a massive trove of explicit material found on his two cellular phones.
Oakleaf admitted to receiving, distributing, and possessing child pornography between March 1, 2022, and July 29, 2024. His offenses were discovered during an investigation into a file-sharing program that was disseminating child sexual abuse material (CSAM).
Investigators traced the IP address associated with the file sharing to Oakleaf and executed search warrants at his residence and office. A forensic analysis of his devices revealed his use of known child exploitation search terms and a vast collection of explicit content, including videos over 90 minutes in length and more than 20,000 images.
Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative by the Department of Justice since 2006, led this investigation. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kraig R. Hamit, with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations providing support.
Oakleaf faces up to 40 years’ imprisonment, a $500,000 fine, and at least five years of supervised release following any prison term. Sentencing has been deferred pending a presentence report. He is currently in custody.
