GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE — In a brutal turn of events, Brian Stafford, 42, a resident of Bellwood, Ill., has been convicted on federal charges of gun and drug trafficking. The jury’s decision followed a tense week-long trial at the U.S. District Court in Chicago.
Stafford was caught with two loaded handguns and illegal drugs, including heroin and crack cocaine, in his vehicle and residence. The illegal narcotics were sold to an undercover agent, who unknowingly worked for law enforcement.
The case took a darker turn when it emerged that Stafford had previously been convicted of possessing three assault rifles, which also originated from a cargo train heist in September 2016. This revelation added further weight to the prosecution’s argument that Stafford was deeply involved in organized crime.
On Friday, the jury found Stafford guilty on multiple counts, including possession of heroin and crack cocaine with intent to distribute, illegal possession of firearms by a previously convicted felon, and possessing firearms in furtherance of drug-trafficking activities. He now faces a mandatory minimum sentence of ten years in federal prison, with a potential life sentence hanging over his head.
Judge Robert W. Gettleman has yet to set a sentencing date for Stafford. The convictions were announced by U.S. Attorney John R. Lausch, Jr., and Special Agent-in-Charge Emmerson Buie, Jr. of the FBI’s Chicago Field Office. The investigation was a collaborative effort involving various law enforcement agencies, including the ATF, Cook County Sheriff’s Office, Evergreen Park Police Department, and Bolingbrook Police Department.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Saurish Appleby-Bhattacharjee and Alejandro Ortega represented the government in this case. As Stafford awaits his fate, it is clear that the streets of suburban Chicago have lost one of their most dangerous figures.
