HOUSTON – A 65-year-old pharmacist from Sugar Land has been charged with the illegal distribution of over 800 oxycodone pills, a stunning revelation in the ongoing battle against drug trafficking. Kirti Ruxmohan made his initial court appearance on October 6th before U.S. Magistrate Judge Peter Bray.
The charges stem from an investigation that uncovered a conspiracy between Ruxmohan and others to distribute oxycodone from May to June. The crew leaders are accused of paying individuals to pose as patients at Houston-area clinics, securing fraudulent prescriptions for controlled substances. Ruxmohan is alleged to have filled several of these prescriptions at his pharmacy, dispensing approximately 810 oxycodone pills in just a few days.
The 10-count indictment against Ruxmohan was returned on October 1st and unsealed with his arrest. If convicted, the pharmacist could face up to 20 years in federal prison and a fine of $1 million. The Drug Enforcement Administration led the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathryn Olson handling the prosecution.
It’s important to note that an indictment is merely a formal accusation, and Ruxmohan is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt through due process of law.
U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei announced the charges, underscoring the severity of the crime. ‘The illegal distribution of opioids poses a significant threat to public safety,’ Ganjei said. ‘We will continue to crack down on those who seek to profit from this crisis at the expense of communities.’
This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by prescription drug abuse and the importance of enforcing strict laws against such activities.
