Tamela Lee, Honest Services Mail and Wire Fraud, Ohio 2024

Former Summit County councilwoman Tamela Lee was found guilty by a jury on all six counts following a weeklong trial. The charges included conspiracy to commit honest services mail and wire fraud, honest services mail fraud, Hobbs Act conspiracy, violating the Hobbs Act, obstruction of justice, and making false statements to law enforcement.

Lee, 58, from Akron, solicited bribes from Omar Abdelqader, including money, loans, campaign contributions, home improvements, and consumer goods. In return, she promised official acts for Abdelqader’s businesses in Akron. This included aiding Abdelqader in navigating government bureaucracy and securing favorable outcomes in judicial and administrative proceedings.

The investigation revealed a pattern of corruption, with Lee using her position to benefit personal interests. She was sentenced to face accountability for violating the public trust, said U.S. Attorney Carole S. Rendon. FBI Special Agent in Charge Stephen D. Anthony emphasized that the FBI will continue to root out public corruption.

Lee’s conviction is a result of an investigation led by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Linda Barr and Adam Hollingsworth, with assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Akron Police Department. Omar Abdelqader, along with his brother Abdelrahman Abdelqader and nephew Samir Abdelqader, have all pleaded guilty to related crimes.

The case underscores the importance of holding public officials accountable for their actions. Lee is scheduled to be sentenced on May 26, facing significant penalties for her crimes.
