Suring Man Charged with Child Sex Abuse
A federal grand jury in the Eastern District of Wisconsin has indicted John E. Fredenburgh, a 36-year-old man from Suring, Wisconsin, on two counts of traveling interstate with the intent to engage in a sexual act with a minor and one count of using a computer to attempt to persuade, induce, or entice a minor to engage in unlawful sexual activity.
If convicted of the interstate travel charges, Fredenburgh faces up to 30 years’ imprisonment on each count. If convicted of the child enticement charge, he faces a mandatory 10 years’ imprisonment and up to a lifetime of imprisonment.
The case was investigated by the Oconto County Sheriff’s Office, the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office, the Menominee, Michigan Sheriff’s Office, the Menominee (Michigan) Police Department, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. It will be prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Daniel R. Humble.
An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. The defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial at which the government must prove him guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006. Led by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
