Synthetic Marijuana Conspiracy Unraveled in Schenectady

Two Schenectady County men are facing serious charges after a coordinated effort by federal and local law enforcement agencies. Rayen Hussein, 41, of Glenville, New York, and Abdulqadoos Alomari, 31, of Schenectady, were arrested on Friday on charges of conspiring to distribute synthetic cannabinoids, also known as ‘spice’ or ‘K2.’

According to a complaint filed in United States District Court, Hussein and Alomari allegedly distributed synthetic marijuana from the Stockade Market and Deli in Schenectady. The operation was said to be a significant concern for public safety, with the potential to cause harm and addiction among users.

Law enforcement officials seized approximately 1 kilogram of synthetic marijuana packaged for distribution. The baggies were uniformly brightly colored and labeled with names including ‘Scooby Snax,’ ‘Ice Dragon,’ ‘Loopy,’ ‘What’s Up,’ and ‘Geeked Up.’

Alomari appeared before United States Magistrate Judge Christina F. Hummel on Monday and was released on conditions including a financial bond. Hussein is currently in custody pending a detention hearing tomorrow before Judge Hummel.

The charges against Hussein and Alomari carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $1 million, and a term of post-imprisonment supervised release of at least 3 years and up to life. The defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Emmet O’Hanlon is leading the prosecution of this case. The DEA, HSI, USPIS, IRS, New York State Police, New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, and local law enforcement agencies assisted in the investigation.

This case highlights the ongoing efforts to combat synthetic marijuana trafficking in the region. As our community continues to grapple with the impacts of addiction and substance abuse, it’s essential that those responsible for perpetuating these issues are held accountable.
