Tai Jauna Jones, a 29-year-old resident of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has been caught in a massive car rental scam that has left victims facing hefty losses. The scheme, which involved the use of fraudulently obtained credit card numbers, resulted in the rental of over 140 vehicles and a staggering loss of over $500,000.
According to the guilty plea, Jones obtained credit card numbers and personal information of numerous individuals through the dark web. She then provided these numbers to a manager at a Monroeville car rental location, who knowingly rented the vehicles without the true owners’ authorization.
The investigation, conducted by the United States Secret Service in conjunction with the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, led to the prosecution of Jones. Assistant United States Attorney Brendan T. Conway is handling the case on behalf of the government.
Jones pleaded guilty to two counts of access device fraud and aggravated identity theft before United States District Judge Marilyn J. Horan. The law provides for a total sentence of not less than two years and up to 12 years in prison, a fine of up to $500,000, or both.
The Court has scheduled sentencing for August 14, 2025. The actual sentence imposed will be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and Jones’ prior criminal history, if any.
As the city of Pittsburgh continues to grapple with the aftermath of this massive scam, victims are left to pick up the pieces and wonder how they can prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
