Baltimore, MD – A ruthless criminal has been handed a decade in federal prison for his role in a series of armed robberies and a daring carjacking. U.S. District Judge Ellen L. Hollander sentenced 21-year-old John Hyman to 10 years behind bars followed by three years of supervised release.
Hyman, along with two accomplices, committed two armed commercial robberies and carjacked a vehicle from an employee in Baltimore County and Baltimore City in November 2022. The spree began when they robbed a 7-Eleven convenience store, fleeing with cash before being tracked by police thanks to a money tracker hidden within the stolen funds.
The trio then traveled to the Stokos carry-out restaurant where one of Hyman’s cohorts stole keys from a delivery driver and more cash. Law enforcement swiftly responded, deploying aviation units to locate the suspects’ getaway vehicles. A high-speed chase ensued before Hyman and his co-conspirators were finally apprehended.
During the arrests, police recovered a loaded Smith & Wesson firearm, adding weight to the charges against Hyman. His co-defendant, Devin Grimes, previously pled guilty and received a 10-year sentence as well.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program dedicated to reducing violent crime and gun violence across Maryland. U.S. Attorney Kelly O. Hayes commended the ATF, Baltimore County Police Department (BCPD), and Baltimore Police Department (BPD) for their diligence in the investigation.
Assistant U.S. Attorney John W. Sippel Jr. prosecuted the case, earning praise from Hayes for his efforts. For more information on the Maryland U.S. Attorney’s Office and Project Safe Neighborhoods, visit justice.gov/usao-md/project-safe-neighborhoods-psn and justice.gov/usao-md/community-outreach.
