Tallahassee Man Sentenced for Tax Fraud Scheme

Yahia Asad, a 50-year-old man from Tallahassee, Florida, was sentenced to 51 months in prison for his involvement in a tax fraud scheme, announced U.S. Attorney Dana J. Boente.

Asad was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $379,310. According to court documents, Asad and others perpetrated a tax fraud scheme from January 2010 through March 2012. They filed false tax returns using the stolen identities of deceased or imprisoned persons, using inflated and erroneous financial information, causing a much larger refund than would be allowed legitimately.

The scheme resulted in a significant loss to the government, with millions of dollars in tax refunds being stolen. This prosecution serves notice that the U.S. Attorney’s Office will aggressively prosecute tax fraud and identity theft, said Boente.

The IRS-CI hopes that the sentencing of Asad serves as a warning to others that IRS and the U.S. Attorney’s Office takes money laundering and identity theft violations very seriously, stated IRS Criminal Investigation Acting Special Agent in Charge, Damon Rowe.

Criminal schemes such as this rob the government of revenue and also shortchange millions of law-abiding Americans who pay their taxes consistently and honestly, said Raymond R. Parmer Jr., Special Agent in Charge of HSI New Orleans.

This case was investigated by Special Agents of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security/Homeland Security Investigations and the Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigations and was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Tracey N. Knight.

Asad’s sentencing is a significant blow to those who would seek to defraud the government, said Boente. The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work with law enforcement agencies to vigorously pursue these investigations and bring those responsible to justice.
