Tampa Woman Gets 7 Years for Tax Return Scam
A 27-year-old Tampa woman has been sentenced to 7 years and 5 months in federal prison for filing fraudulent tax returns using stolen personal identifying information, authorities announced.
Jameshia Mack was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Richard A. Lazzara in connection with a scheme that involved filing false and fraudulent income tax returns in her own and other persons’ names, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
As part of her sentence, the court entered a money judgment in the amount of $100,135 against Mack, representing the proceeds she received from the scheme, and ordered her to pay restitution in that amount to the Internal Revenue Service.
Mack, who was on federal supervised release at the time of the offense, had previously served a prison term for bank fraud and aggravated identity theft in the Western District of Kentucky.
According to court documents, Mack filed false tax returns in her own and other persons’ names, directing that the returns be put onto prepaid debit cards. She then withdrew cash from the debit cards or spent the funds on retail purchases, a luxury automobile, and casino transactions.
When the Tampa Police Department encountered Mack during a traffic stop, she had stacks of cash along with multiple credit cards and prepaid debit cards in other people’s names.
The case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation and the Tampa Police Department. It is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Josephine W. Thomas.
Mack pleaded guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft on October 17, 2013. Her sentence includes 75 months in federal prison for wire fraud, followed by an additional 14 months in federal prison for committing the crimes while on supervised release.
