Taunton Man Charged in Bank Robbery
A Taunton man has been charged in connection with a brazen bank robbery in Allston, Massachusetts. Philip L. Campanirio, 52, was charged in federal court in Boston with one count of bank robbery, a crime that carries a sentence of no greater than 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of $250,000.
According to court documents, Campanirio robbed approximately $4,680 from a branch of the Citizens Bank in Allston on April 28, 2018. The heist occurred while the defendant was on supervised release for a previous bank robbery conviction.
Campanirio was arrested on August 31, 2018, and has been detained in federal custody since. The charges against the Taunton man were announced by United States Attorney Andrew E. Lelling, Harold H. Shaw, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Boston Police Chief William Gross.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kenneth G. Shine of Lelling’s Major Crimes Unit. The details contained in the charging documents are mere allegations, and Campanirio is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
Campanirio’s previous bank robbery conviction and subsequent supervised release are a stark reminder of the consequences of committing such crimes. The fact that he committed another bank robbery while on supervised release raises concerns about the effectiveness of the current system.
The public is advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities. The Boston Police Department and the FBI are working tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of the community.
The investigation into Campanirio’s activities is ongoing, and further charges may be filed. The public is urged to come forward with any information that may aid in the investigation.
