Thanjavur Manavalan, a 65-year-old tax preparer from Bellevue, Washington, was convicted of falsifying tax returns for his clients, attracting many from the tech field, particularly those originally from India. The conviction came after an 8-day jury trial in Seattle, with jurors deliberating for about two days before reaching the guilty verdict. Manavalan’s scheme involved adding false items to clients’ tax returns, including charitable contributions and business losses, to reduce their tax liability. The motive behind the scheme was to build his tax preparation business, Mano Accounting Services, by saving his clients money on their taxes.
Prosecutors presented evidence that Manavalan’s business filed thousands of returns and grew substantially over the course of the fraud scheme. The fake businesses and losses he created allowed his clients to claim deductions, resulting in lower tax payments. However, this scheme was not just about typos or minor errors; it was a deliberate attempt to deceive the IRS. Assistant United States Attorney Carolyn Forstein emphasized that the items Manavalan added to the tax returns were ‘complete inventions’ and not just mistakes.
Manavalan’s conviction marks the end of his fraudulent scheme, which was designed to increase his profits by growing his business. The IRS Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI) played a crucial role in uncovering the scheme, with Special Agent in Charge Carrie Nordyke stating that Manavalan ‘simply lied’ and falsified his clients’ tax returns. The case will now move to sentencing, scheduled for July 15, 2026, before U.S. District Judge Lauren King.
