Atlanta Tax Preparer Sentenced for Tax Fraud

Amberula Levitt, the 45-year-old owner of Tax Time Tax Service, has been handed a one-year and nine-month prison sentence for committing tax fraud on her own personal tax returns. According to court documents, Levitt used her knowledge and skills to defraud the tax system.

Levitt, who operated the tax preparation business with multiple locations throughout metro Atlanta, under-reported her earnings from Tax Time on her personal tax returns. This resulted in a significant amount of back taxes owed to the IRS.

United States Attorney Sally Quillian Yates stated, ‘Individuals in the business of preparing tax returns for others should set an example of tax compliance. Instead, Levitt used her knowledge and skills to defraud the tax system. For that, she will be punished.’

The IRS has been cracking down on dishonest return preparers, with Special Agent in Charge Veronica F. Hyman-Pillot stating, ‘While most preparers provide excellent service to their clients, a few dishonest return preparers give the industry a black eye. Return preparers must comply with the same tax obligations as the clients they serve. No one is above the law.’

Levitt has been ordered to pay restitution to the IRS in the amount of $620,004, and complete 100 hours of community service. She was convicted on two counts of filing false tax returns for the 2004 and 2005 tax years, and pleaded guilty on October 29, 2013.

This case is being investigated by the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation, with Trial Attorney Christopher J. Maietta and Assistant United States Attorney Steven D. Grimberg prosecuting the case.

Levitt’s sentence serves as a reminder that tax return preparers are not above the law, and that they must comply with the same tax obligations as their clients. The IRS will continue to crack down on dishonest return preparers, and bring them to justice for their crimes.
