Conspiracy and Fraud in Western Pennsylvania

Taylor Frierson, a 29-year-old resident of Columbia, South Carolina, has pleaded guilty in federal court to a charge of conspiracy to commit offenses against the United States.

The crime, which took place from April 2019 to July 2019, involved Frierson conspiring with others to steal checks contained in United States mail at local businesses and other establishments in Western Pennsylvania. The victims of this conspiracy were left with tens of thousands of dollars in losses.

According to the plea agreement, Frierson and her co-conspirators would send photographs of legitimate checks to other members of the group, who would then create altered, fraudulent versions of the checks. These fake checks were made payable to individuals from the local area, who were recruited by Frierson and her co-conspirators. The individuals would then cash the fake checks at local banks, with Frierson driving them to the banks to complete the transactions.

The law provides for a total sentence of not more than 5 years in prison, a fine not to exceed $250,000, or both. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed will be based on the seriousness of the offense and Frierson’s prior criminal history, if any.

United States District Judge Robert J. Colville scheduled sentencing for December 2, 2021, at 11:00 am. Frierson was ordered to be released on bond pending sentencing.

This case was the result of an investigation by multiple agencies, including the Pennsylvania State Police, Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General, the United States Secret Service, and the United States Postal Inspection Service. Assistant United States Attorney Brian M. Czarnecki is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government.

Taylor Frierson’s guilty plea marks a significant blow to her conspiracy and fraud operation, which left numerous individuals in Western Pennsylvania with significant financial losses.
