A New York City public school teacher, Joseph Taylor McKeel, has pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography. The guilty plea was entered in federal court in Brooklyn, where McKeel faces up to 20 years in prison. McKeel, a high school biology teacher, was caught with hundreds of explicit images of child sexual abuse, including infants and toddlers, on his way to work in March 2026.
According to court filings, McKeel was arrested after a backpack containing a thumb drive with over 150 images of child sexual abuse and a pipe used for smoking methamphetamine was found on him. An additional device containing child sexual abuse material was discovered during a search warrant at his residence.
United States Attorney Joseph Nocella stated that McKeel’s actions were a top priority for prosecution, as they involved the victimization of children and the exploitation of their trust. FBI Assistant Director in Charge James C. Barnacle Jr. also condemned McKeel’s actions, calling them a horrific violation of law and a profound betrayal of the trust placed in him as a teacher.
This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Justice in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. McKeel’s sentencing is pending, and he faces up to 20 years in prison for his crimes.
