Philip Schuler, a former adjunct professor at Suffolk County Community College, was arraigned in federal court in Central Islip, New York, on a seven-count indictment charging him with attempted coercion and enticement of a minor and child pornography. The alleged crimes took place between October 2025 and January 2026, when Schuler was communicating with an FBI undercover agent posing as a 13-year-old girl. Schuler, who was arrested in January 2026, is accused of sending explicit photos and messages to the supposed teenager before planning to meet her in person for sexual abuse.
The investigation began when the Decoy Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to identifying online predators, tipped off the FBI about Schuler’s activities. An FBI undercover agent, posing as the 13-year-old girl, began communicating with Schuler on the social media platform Discord, and Schuler repeatedly expressed his interest in having a sexual relationship with the girl.
United States Attorney Joseph Nocella and FBI Assistant Director in Charge James C. Barnacle announced the charges, stating that Schuler’s alleged actions reveal a disturbing desire to groom and exploit a vulnerable child. The FBI and the US Attorney’s Office are committed to protecting minors from online sexual predators and holding accountable those who target children.
Schuler was ordered to be detained pending trial by United States Magistrate Judge James M. Wicks. If convicted, Schuler faces serious prison time for his alleged crimes. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance in protecting children from online predators and the need for swift action to bring perpetrators to justice.
