WASHINGTON – Keon Preston, 19, of Washington D.C., faced the Superior Court today for a dual crime spree on March 23, 2025. Preston admitted to a shooting that evening and an armed carjacking later that same night, according to U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro.
In a shocking turn of events, Preston was charged with assault with intent to kill, possession of a machine gun, and carjacking, while his co-defendant, Mekhi Greene, 19, pleaded guilty solely for the carjacking. Their sentencing is set for December 19, 2025, before Honorable Judge Deborah Israel. Carjacking convictions in D.C. carry a mandatory minimum sentence of seven years.
The government’s evidence revealed that at approximately 4:11 p.m., Preston and two unnamed suspects unleashed around 30 rounds on an unsuspecting victim near the 4600 block of G Street Southeast. The victim, though unharmed, witnessed multiple bullets strike his residence and vehicle as he approached a bus stop.
Later that night, at approximately 9:19 p.m., the same trio, now masked and dressed in dark attire, carjacked another victim on East Capitol Street Northeast. After a high-speed chase that ended with the suspects fleeing into a dead-end, they were quickly apprehended by MPD officers. Two illegal firearms, one equipped with an automatic conversion switch, were recovered from the stolen vehicle.
Preston and Greene have been in custody since their arrest at the scene of the crime. Joining the announcement was Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department, who emphasized the agency’s dedication to holding criminals accountable for such senseless acts.
This investigation is a testament to the hard work of the Metropolitan Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jacob Green leading the prosecution efforts.
