GRIMY TIMES – Derrick Teeter, 23, of Oxon Hill, MD, was handed a seven-year sentence today for a brazen carjacking he committed in Southeast Washington, D.C., last year. The sentence, announced by U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief Jessica M.E. Taylor of the U.S. Park Police, sees Teeter serving 60 months for robbery and an additional 24 months for unlawful use of a vehicle.
Teeter’s criminal spree began on June 2, 2022, when he requested a Lyft ride, pretentiously claimed sickness, and convinced the victim to pull over. Once the victim’s back was turned retrieving items from his car, Teeter struck, taking off with the rideshare vehicle and dragging the injured man for a short distance.
The victim, lying on the ground, managed to flag down other drivers, who called 911. The U.S. Park Police and Metropolitan Police Department worked together to recover the stolen vehicle the next day. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathryn Bartz prosecuted the case, while Superior Court Judge Erik Christian denied Teeter’s Youth Rehabilitation Act request.
Teeter pleaded guilty on February 7, 2024, to robbery and unlawful use of a vehicle, in accordance with a plea agreement. The court has been firm, denying his youth as a mitigating factor.
This case underscores the ongoing threat posed by carjackings, even in seemingly safe rideshare situations. It serves as a stark reminder of the dangers on our city streets and the dedication of law enforcement to bring justice to those who prey on others.
