Former Tennessee resident Daniel J. Richardson Jr., aged 62, was handed a five-year federal prison term following his conviction on possession of unregistered firearms in South Dakota. Richardson’s transgressions included the illegal possession of two firearm silencers, which had not been registered to him in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record.
The sentencing by U.S. District Court Judge Karen E. Schreier also imposed a two-year supervised release period, ordering Richardson to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund on May 31, 2019.
Richardson’s conviction stemmed from an incident in September 2018 where he possessed the unregistered silencers. Initially charged with sending threatening communications regarding Jesuits at Red Cloud Indian School, that charge was dismissed as part of a plea agreement. However, the threatening nature of these communications was acknowledged by the court during sentencing.
In a statement, U.S. Attorney Ron Parsons commended the FBI and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety for their role in Richardson’s apprehension. ‘This case is an example of how effective communication and decisive law enforcement action can prevent potential tragedy,’ Parsons emphasized.
This sentencing is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime. The Department of Justice reinvigorated PSN in 2017, directing all U.S. Attorney’s Offices to collaborate with federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement to develop strategies for crime reduction.
Investigation of the case was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety. Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Patterson handled the prosecution. Richardson was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service following sentencing.
