Terry Flournoy, Gun Possession by Felon, Fort Myers FL, 2023

FORT MYERS, FL – Terry Kristopher Flournoy, 23, of Fort Myers, is headed to federal prison after a careless social media post landed him in the crosshairs of law enforcement. U.S. District Judge Thomas Barber sentenced Flournoy to two years and six months for possessing a firearm and ammunition as a convicted felon, a clear violation of federal law. The court also ordered forfeiture of the illegally held weapon and its ammunition.

The case unfolded after Flournoy posted a video to Instagram on April 27, 2020. While seemingly innocuous – the video depicted food at a local Fort Myers restaurant – it was enough to draw the attention of the Fort Myers Police Department, who were already operating on an active warrant for his arrest. When officers apprehended Flournoy, they discovered a loaded Glock pistol on his person. Forensic analysis later confirmed Flournoy’s fingerprint on the firearm’s magazine.

Adding to the evidence, investigators uncovered another social media post from the same night of his arrest. This video showed Flournoy pointing what appeared to be the same Glock pistol directly at the camera. The brazen display proved to be his undoing. As a convicted felon, Flournoy was legally barred from owning or possessing any firearms or ammunition, making the discovery a slam-dunk case for federal prosecutors.

Flournoy pleaded guilty on December 21, 2022, acknowledging his illegal possession. Assistant United States Attorney Mark Morgan successfully prosecuted the case, building a solid argument based on the physical evidence and damning social media posts. The investigation was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Fort Myers Police Department, highlighting the importance of inter-agency cooperation in tackling gun crime.

Federal officials are framing this case as a win for “Project Safe Neighborhoods” (PSN), a program designed to reduce violent crime and gun violence by uniting law enforcement at all levels with the communities they serve. The Department of Justice launched a strengthened PSN strategy in May 2021, focusing on building trust, supporting community organizations, and strategic enforcement.

While the feds tout PSN’s community-building aspects, the reality for Flournoy is a cold federal prison cell. The case serves as a stark warning: in the age of social media, even seemingly harmless posts can be used as evidence against you, especially when you’re already walking on the wrong side of the law. The Tampa Field Division of the ATF oversaw the investigation.
