Dakota Mitchell, a 21-year-old from Clever, Missouri, has been sentenced to 78 months in federal prison for his role in a firearms trafficking ring. Between April 28, 2023, and July 9, 2024, Mitchell unlawfully possessed six Glock pistols and a Micro Draco pistol, which he obtained with the help of a straw purchaser. As a member of the local street gang FTO, Mitchell was prohibited from possessing firearms due to his history of drug use.
Mitchell’s crimes were uncovered after a series of incidents, including a road rage incident on May 11, 2023, where he admitted to yelling and shooting at a vehicle. He was also involved in a car accident on January 30, 2024, where he brandished a firearm. Additionally, a Glock 9mm pistol was recovered from a vehicle in the parking lot of Ozark High School on April 11, 2024.
Mitchell pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced by Chief U.S. District Judge Brian C. Wimes. His sentence will be followed by a three-year term of supervised release. The case was investigated by the Greene County Sheriff’s Office, the Springfield Police Department, and the Ozark School Resource officers.
The FTO street gang has been linked to several violent crimes and firearm offenses in the area. Many of its members are unable to purchase firearms due to their youth, history of drug use, or other prohibited status, and instead use straw purchasers to obtain them.
