Texas Man Caught with 4.01 kg of Marijuana at USVI Airport
AUSTIN, TX resident Lequan Jaheem Pemberton, 26, has been sentenced to two years’ probation for possession with intent to distribute marijuana.
On December 21, 2020, Customs and Border Protection Officers were conducting baggage exams on an American Airlines flight arriving from Miami, FL. Pemberton was selected for a secondary bag examination after a preliminary bag exam revealed several plastic wrapped bundles in his carry-on luggage.
Further inspection of the bundles revealed a green leafy substance that tested positive for marijuana, weighing approximately 4.01 kilograms. Pemberton was read his Miranda Rights and waived his rights. During questioning by HSI, Pemberton stated that the marijuana belonged to him, and he claimed that he intended to smoke it.
The case was investigated by the Department of Homeland Security and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Juan Albino. United States Attorney Gretchen C.F. Shappert announced the sentencing, emphasizing the severity of the crime.
Pemberton’s actions pose a significant threat to public health and safety. The large quantity of marijuana seized in this case is a clear indication of his intent to distribute the substance.
The Virgin Islands community can rest assured that law enforcement agencies are working tirelessly to combat drug trafficking and ensure the safety of its residents.
The sentencing serves as a warning to those who would attempt to smuggle illicit substances into the USVI. Pemberton’s two-year probation sentence is a consequence of his actions, and it serves as a reminder of the serious repercussions of engaging in such activities.
