Tax Preparer Busted for False Deductions

A McAllen, Texas tax preparer has been permanently barred from preparing federal tax returns after allegedly claiming false deductions and credits, the Grimy Times has learned.

Maria I. Cantu, a tax preparer in McAllen, agreed to a civil injunction order, which also requires her to turn over a list of clients she prepared tax returns for between 2010 and 2012 and notify them of the permanent injunction.

According to court documents, Cantu’s activities led to her clients filing returns that unlawfully understated income tax liabilities and overstated refunds.

The complaint alleged that Cantu prepared returns containing false, improper, or inflated deductions or tax credits, including the earned income tax credit.

Return preparer fraud is one of the IRS’ Dirty Dozen Tax Scams for 2013, and the IRS has tips on choosing a tax preparer on their website.

The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas in McAllen permanently barred Cantu from preparing federal tax returns for others.

The Tax Division has obtained injunctions against hundreds of unscrupulous tax preparers in the past decade, and information about these cases is available on the Justice Department’s website.

Those who believe that Cantu or any other enjoined tax preparer may be violating an injunction are urged to contact the Tax Division with details.
