Convicted bank robber Thomas Eugene, 54, of New Orleans, received a lengthy prison sentence for his role in the 2009 Iberia Bank heist.
On February 25, 2009, Eugene walked into the Iberia Bank located at 601 Poydras Street in the Pan-American building in New Orleans and handed a teller a note demanding money.
The teller complied, handing over $5,269 in cash, which was later confirmed by an audit of the bank’s records.
Eugene was taken into custody and later pleaded guilty to one count of bank robbery. The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the New Orleans Police Department.
U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite praised the work of the investigators, saying they helped bring this case to a successful close.
Eugene was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Sarah S. Vance to 160 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. He will also pay $5,269 in restitution and a $100 special assessment.
This sentence is a reminder that bank robbery is a serious crime with severe consequences. We will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to bring perpetrators to justice and protect the community.
