Pittsburgh Couple Faces Prison Time for Unapproved Steroid Distribution
A Pittsburgh couple with ties to the fitness industry has pleaded guilty to distributing unapproved steroids, a crime that could land them in prison for up to five years.
Thomas Mouton, 34, and Sara Mouton, 36, pleaded guilty in federal court to a charge of conspiring to defraud the United States, specifically the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
According to court documents, the couple conspired with each other and others to distribute steroids to consumers through the internet and personal acquaintances between 2018 and May 2019. None of the drugs they distributed were approved by the FDA, and the couple mislabeled the substances with inaccurate names and inadequate directions for use.
The investigation was conducted by the United States Postal Inspection Service and the FDA’s Office of Criminal Investigations, and Assistant United States Attorney Christopher M. Cook is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government.
The couple’s actions were motivated by a desire to defraud the FDA and impede its ability to regulate the manufacturing, labeling, and distribution of drugs in the United States, according to court documents.
Thomas and Sara Mouton began distributing steroids to their associates in the fitness industry but expanded their business through word of mouth to serve hundreds of clients, Acting U.S. Attorney Stephen R. Kaufman said.
The couple’s sentencing is scheduled for March 3, 2022. The law provides for a total sentence of not more than five years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both.
Individuals who defraud the FDA will be held accountable for their crimes, Kaufman said. The FDA will continue to aggressively pursue those who place the public health at risk, said Special Agent in Charge Mark S. McCormack.
