Amy Adkins, Travel with Intent to Engage in Illicit Sexual Conduct, West Virginia 2018

Huntington, W.Va. – In a grim turn of events, former high school Spanish teacher Amy Adkins has been sentenced to federal prison for traveling across state lines to have sex with a student and selling the prescription drug Adderall.

Adkins, 30, received a five-year sentence for travel with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct and distribution of Adderall. She was also ordered to complete 20 years of supervised release and register as a sex offender.

United States Attorney Mike Stuart stated, “Adkins abused her position of authority as a teacher to betray the trust of this student and his family.”

According to court documents, Adkins communicated frequently with an underage male student on social media while teaching at Fairland High School in Proctorville, Ohio. She admitted driving from Huntington to pick up the student and bringing him back for the purpose of engaging in sexual activity. The incident occurred at her home in Huntington.

In addition to the sexual misconduct, Adkins confessed to selling a portion of her Adderall prescription from September 2017 to May 2018 to friends and acquaintances. She admitted selling five pills to a close friend on March 9, 2018.

The investigation was conducted by the FBI, West Virginia State Police, and the Lawrence County, Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. Assistant United States Attorney Kristin F. Scott handled the prosecution. The case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a Justice Department initiative to combat child sexual exploitation.
