Thompson, 77, Faces Prison for Sex Offender Registration Failures

PLANO, Texas – Larry Wayne Thompson, 77, of McKinney, Texas, is staring down federal prison time after a jury found him guilty of repeatedly failing to comply with sex offender registration requirements. The verdict came on July 30, 2014, in the Eastern District of Texas before U.S. District Judge Richard Schell, according to a statement released today by U.S. Attorney John M. Bales.

Thompson’s troubles stem from a 2000 conviction in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Oklahoma – possession of child pornography. That conviction triggered a lifetime obligation to register as a sex offender under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA). But Thompson, rather than comply, went on the move, leaving a trail of registration failures in his wake.

Court records show Thompson relocated to Corpus Christi, Texas, in 2011. He failed to register there, leading to a prior conviction for the same offense in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas. Undeterred, Thompson moved again in 2013, this time to McKinney, Texas, and still didn’t update his registration. It was this latest failure that landed him in court and ultimately, a guilty verdict.

Prosecutors William R. Tatum and Stevan A. Buys presented evidence detailing Thompson’s pattern of evasion. The U.S. Marshals Service spearheaded the investigation, tracking Thompson’s movements and building the case against him. Thompson now faces up to two years in federal prison. A sentencing date has not yet been set.

This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 by the Department of Justice aimed at combating child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project focuses on leveraging federal, state, and local resources to identify, apprehend, and prosecute offenders, and to rescue victims. Details on Project Safe Childhood can be found at www.projectsafechildhood.gov.

Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on Thompson’s sentencing. The repeated disregard for legal obligations, especially in cases involving child exploitation, underscores the importance of strict enforcement of sex offender registration laws. This isn’t just about paperwork; it’s about protecting vulnerable children.
