LAS VEGAS – Robert Earl Thompson, 31, is headed to federal prison for a decade after terrorizing United States Postal Service mail carriers earlier this year. Thompson was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment followed by five years of supervised release for a string of brazen armed robberies that plagued Las Vegas routes in early 2023. The sentence, handed down by United States District Judge Cristina D. Silva on April 22, 2024, reflects the severity of Thompson’s actions and the vulnerability of those serving the public.
Court documents reveal Thompson systematically targeted USPS employees between January and March 2023, brandishing a firearm during each encounter. The robberies weren’t simple thefts; in at least one instance, Thompson held a gun directly to a mail carrier’s head while demanding their belongings. This isn’t a case of desperation, it’s calculated violence against a vital public service.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department apprehended Thompson on March 9, 2023. A search revealed he was illegally carrying a 9mm semiautomatic handgun and a .380 caliber semiautomatic handgun – weapons he was legally prohibited from possessing due to a lengthy rap sheet. Thompson’s prior felony convictions in Clark County, Nevada, include attempt leaving the scene of an accident, attempt ownership or possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, possession of stolen property, and attempt burglary. This pattern of criminal behavior clearly demonstrates a disregard for the law and the safety of others.
“U.S. Postal Inspectors will relentlessly investigate all acts of violence against USPS employees,” stated Inspector in Charge Glen Henderson of the United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS), Phoenix Division. “Letter carriers are servants of the community and not only deserve respect, but also be able to complete their job safely. This significant sentence sends a message that those who attack public servants will be brought to justice.” Henderson’s words underscore the seriousness with which federal authorities are treating these attacks.
Thompson pleaded guilty to three counts of robbery of United States property with use of a dangerous weapon and two counts of felon in possession of a firearm. Assistant United States Attorney Edward Veronda skillfully prosecuted the case, presenting the evidence that led to Thompson’s conviction and subsequent sentencing. The successful collaboration between the USPIS and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department was critical to bringing Thompson to justice.
United States Attorney Jason M. Frierson for the District of Nevada emphasized that this case serves as a warning to anyone considering targeting federal employees. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on any further developments. This isn’t just about robberies; it’s about protecting the men and women who deliver essential services to our communities, even in the face of danger.
