Three From Oglala Charged With False Statement And Fraud
Three individuals from Oglala, South Dakota, have been hit with federal charges for attempting to obtain controlled substances by deceitful means.
Thelma Tail, age 32, Antone Little Moon, age 33, and Shannon Long Jaw, age 38, were indicted by a federal grand jury on May 20, 2014, for making false statements relating to healthcare matters and attempting to obtain controlled substances by fraud.
On May 29 and 30, 2014, the trio appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy and pled not guilty to the indictment. If convicted, they could face up to 5 years in custody and/or a $250,000 fine, 1 year of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.
The charges stem from an incident on September 16, 2013, when the three used a fraudulent document in an attempt to obtain Hydrocodone at the Indian Health Services Pharmacy in Pine Ridge.
The investigation is being conducted by the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the Inspector General, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathryn N. Rich handling the case.
All three defendants were released on bond pending trial, with a scheduled date set for August 5, 2014.
The charges against Thelma Tail, Antone Little Moon, and Shannon Long Jaw are mere accusations, and they are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
