West Haven Man Pleads Guilty to Possessing Firearms While Addicted to Oxycodone
A West Haven man has pleaded guilty to possessing firearms while being an unlawful user of a federally controlled substance.
According to court documents, Timothy O’Mara, 36, was arrested on September 13, 2016, by members of the ATF’s New Haven Task Force at his West Haven residence. During the search, officers found a cigarette box containing oxycodone pills and several straws with a powdery residue, which O’Mara admitted would test positive for the presence of drugs.
A search of O’Mara’s residence revealed two pistols, four rifles, two shotguns and assorted ammunition. Subsequent analysis of O’Mara’s cell phone revealed text messages in which he repeatedly arranged for the illegal purchase of oxycodone pills.
O’Mara waived his right to be indicted and pleaded guilty to one count of possessing firearms while being an unlawful user of a federally controlled substance. The charge carries a maximum term of imprisonment of 10 years.
O’Mara is scheduled to be sentenced by Chief U.S. District Judge Janet C. Hall on March 13, 2018. He is currently out on a $10,000 bond pending sentencing.
The matter is being investigated by the ATF’s New Haven Task Force with the assistance of the New Haven Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael E. Runowicz.
