Todd Stephens, Fentanyl Trafficking, West Virginia 2019

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – In a shocking turn of events, Todd Stephens, 33, from Detroit, Michigan, has pleaded guilty to federal drug charges in West Virginia. The charges stem from an investigation conducted by MDENT, which uncovered a stash of over 50 grams of fentanyl, a highly potent and deadly synthetic opioid.

According to the plea agreement, Stephens admitted to selling what he thought was heroin to a woman on August 28, 2017. However, the substance was actually fentanyl, and the sale was the catalyst for the investigation that led to the discovery of the large quantity of fentanyl at his Charleston apartment.

United States Attorney Mike Stuart emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “If the fentanyl in these cases had hit the streets, over 25,000 people could have died. Enough fentanyl to kill over half the city of Charleston.” He also highlighted the success of Operation Synthetic Opioid Surge (S.O.S.), an enforcement surge aimed at reducing the supply of deadly synthetic opioids in high-impact areas.

Stephens faces up to 20 years in federal prison when he is sentenced on August 6, 2019. The plea hearing was presided over by United States District Judge David A. Faber, with Assistant United States Attorney Alex Hamner handling the prosecution.

The case is being prosecuted as part of Operation Synthetic Opioid Surge (S.O.S.), which seeks to reduce the supply of deadly synthetic opioids in high-impact areas. The investigation was conducted by MDENT, and the plea agreement has brought a significant result in the fight against fentanyl trafficking.

Todd Stephens’ guilty plea serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of fentanyl trafficking. As the nation grapples with the opioid epidemic, cases like Stephens’ highlight the need for continued efforts to combat the scourge of synthetic opioids.
