GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: A repeat offender has been hit with federal charges for an armed heist in Toledo.
Eugene Coley, 49, of Toledo, was named in an indictment for the February 1 armed robbery of the Stop and Shop on Lagrange Street. According to Acting U.S. Attorney David A. Sierleja, FBI Special Agent in Charge Stephen D. Anthony, and Toledo Police Chief George Kral, Coley’s actions have once again landed him in legal trouble.
Coley, who has a history of armed robberies, was indicted on three counts: robbery in violation of the Hobbs Act, brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. The 9 mm Sturm, Ruger pistol he used during the theft was no mere prop; it was his tool of terror.
Back in 2002, Coley was convicted of two counts of aggravated robbery with a firearms specification, making him legally barred from owning or possessing a firearm. Yet, he managed to use one to rob a local business.
The court will determine Coley’s sentence based on his prior criminal record, his role in the offense, and the characteristics of the violation. One thing is clear: if convicted, he’ll face a stiff penalty that won’t exceed the statutory maximum, but may be less than that.
This case has been a joint effort between the FBI and the Toledo Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Tracey Tangeman is handling the prosecution. As always, an indictment is just a charge, andColeysis entitled to a fair trial where the government must prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
