Crime grips the nation as communities come together to promote partnerships and safety. In the face of rising crime, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Indiana is taking a proactive stance.
U.S. Attorney Tom Wheeler has announced that his office will join law enforcement partners, neighbors, and communities in National Night Out events in the Greater Indianapolis area and Evansville. This marks the third year of participation in events across Indianapolis, with Evansville joining the list for the first time.
National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that encourages partnerships between law enforcement and the communities they serve to make neighborhoods safer places to live. Millions take part in National Night Out across thousands of communities throughout the country on the first Tuesday of August.
The program was established in 1984 with funding from the Bureau of Justice Assistance. It is administered by the National Association of Town Watch, a nationwide non-profit organization.
Coordinated by local law enforcement and trained volunteers, National Night Out provides an opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances. Neighborhoods host block parties, cookouts, festivals, parades, safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, visits from emergency personnel, and more.
National Night Out sends a message that neighbors are united and working together to keep their communities and each other safe. By participating in these events, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Indiana is demonstrating its commitment to building trust and strengthening partnerships within the community.
In Indianapolis, the Kickoff Ceremony and Crime Fighters of the Year Awards will take place on Tuesday, August 5, from 5-9pm. In Evansville, a National Night Out Community Celebration will be held from 6-8:30pm CT at CK Newsome. These events are a testament to the power of community partnerships in keeping neighborhoods safe.
